COMMUNITY PROFILE & SCHOOL HISTORY

Located between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles on the Pacific Coast, the city of Oxnard, with a population of approximately 158,300, is a culturally and ethnically diverse community. Oxnard's name comes from the family that developed one of the area's first industries, a sugar beet factory.  Oxnard is surrounded by some of the richest agricultural land in the world.  The Chamber of Commerce describes Oxnard as "an international city...an agricultural leader and resort community...and a world trade port."  Explore the City of Oxnard!

The Oxnard Union High School District was organized by a group of Oxnard citizens on October 4, 1901. Adolfo Camarillo was one of those citizens and ranchers who helped create Oxnard High. The boundary was from the Ventura River to the Los Angeles County line, and Oxnard High was the only school in the district. The first class began in 1902 and had 41 students, one principal, and two teachers. The courses offered were Latin, English, history, and mathematics.

The Board of Trustees in 1909 were:  M.H. Gabbert, President; Adolfo Camarillo, W.E. Goodyear, Charles Gill, E.H. Wood, G.A. Hails, H.W. Witman, and James Leonard.
