PROFILE & SCHOOL HISTORY
Located between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles on the
Pacific Coast, the city of Oxnard, with a population of approximately
158,300, is a
culturally and ethnically diverse community. Oxnard's name comes from
the family that developed one of the area's first industries, a sugar
beet factory. Oxnard is surrounded by some of the richest
agricultural land in the world. The Chamber of Commerce describes Oxnard as
"an international city...an agricultural leader and resort community...and a world

South "A" Street in person. The Oxnard Union High School District was
organized by a group of Oxnard citizens on October 4, 1901. Adolfo Camarillo was one of
those citizens and ranchers who helped create Oxnard High. The boundary was from the
Ventura River to the Los Angeles County line, and Oxnard High was the only school in the
district. The first class began in 1902 and had 41 students, one principal, and two
teachers. The courses offered were Latin, English, history, and mathematics.
The
Board of Trustees in 1909 were: M.H. Gabbert, President; Adolfo
Camarillo, W.E. Goodyear, Charles Gill, E.H. Wood, G.A. Hails, H.W.
Witman, and James Leonard.

Now, Oxnard High School is one of five comprehensive high schools in the Oxnard
Union High School District. The staff and students are proud of the new state-of-the-art
campus which opened September 5, 1995.
