The Camarillo Noontime Optimist Club recognized four high school students for their winning essays during the club’s regular meeting on April 30. Shannon Smith, right, tookrst place, while Emily Schwartz, center, won third. Six finalists were selected by a team of educators not affiliated with high schools or the Optimist Club from more than 40 contestants from local high schools to write on the topic “How My Positive Outlook Affects My Community.”
The top four essays, which included a tie for third place, were written by students from Adolfo Camarillo High School. First place was awarded to Shannon Smith, 17, a junior; second place went to Jean-Luc Pierre Chamaa, 17, a senior; and third place went to Emily Schwartz and Christine Vu, both 17, juniors.
Awards and gifts were presented by Mike Kroll, essay contest chair.
The attending winners told the Optimists about their plans for college.
