One year later, Joseph Ramirez found redemption.

After what he termed a “horrible” performance in the CIF-SS Coastal Division wrestling championships in 2011, the Rio Mesa senior thrived with a second chance Saturday.

Ramirez polished off a 4-1 showing at 220 pounds to place fourth in the 2012 championships and earn a trip to next week’s CIF-SS Masters.

“After what I’ve been through, this feels like first place,” he said. “I had a horrible tournament last year. I didn’t wrestle well it all. It taught me that I had a lot of work to do, and that’s what I did all summer and through this season.
