Scholar athlete wins $1,500 commissary scholarship

An 18-year-old standout football player from Rio Mesa High School who sports a 4.155 grade point average is the winner of a $1,500 scholarship presented by the commissary at Naval Base Ventura County, Port Hueneme.

John Tagum of Camarillo, the son of Salvador and Josefina Tagum, plans to study mechanical engineering at the University of California, Davis.

“I plan to study, not party,” he told Commissary Director Bill Benner as he picked up the award.
