Pat Casey enjoyed taking his Oxnard High girls volleyball team to Hawaii in the summer to participate in tournaments.
But the high level of competition came with a high cost.
Once Casey realized his program couldn’t afford the travel anymore, he began searching for an alternative closer to home.
Casey couldn’t find anything similar, so he decided to start his own tournament. It began with just five teams and the lure of free T-shirts.
The inaugural event received such positive reviews that word quickly spread among volleyball coaches.
Now in it its fourth year, Oxnard’s Summer Invitational Girls’ Volleyball Tournament has grown to a 12-team event featuring some of the top teams in Southern California.
“It keeps getting stronger every year and the coaches seem to like it,” Casey said. “It’s tough to get a summer event where everybody is super competitive right off the bat to get the kids prepared for the high school season. But this tournament does that, especially this year. It’s been the best one yet.” …
