Three Oxnard schools have been named front-runners in a statewide fitness competition organized by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

McAuliffe, Fremont Intermediate and Hueneme High made the list of 30 schools throughout California selected for the award. They will receive $1,000 each.

The competition is for K-12 schools in California. Students try to be active 30 to 60 minutes a day at least three times a week, for a month. Front-runner awards go to schools that record the most “active days” by Jan. 31.

Schools also compete for three grand prizes — fitness activity centers — and 11 regional awards of $5,000 for exercise equipment.
