Computer Proficiency Test

As you may know you can meet this Computer Proficiency requirement by taking a board approved course listed under Item E of Administrative Policy 6146.1 that incorporates the necessary skills. If for whatever reasons you have chosen to take the Computer Proficiency Test instead of taking an approved course this website will help you prepare for the exam.

For a student to receive certification of computer proficiency, the student must demonstrate that they have acquired the necessary skills pertaining to Basic Computer Skills, World Wide Web, Email, Windows, Word and Excel.

The specific skill requirements are listed in Board Policy 6146.1. Students can either take the computer proficiency test or successfully complete a board approved course listed under Item E of Administrative Policy 6146.1 which fulfills the computer proficiency requirements. There are a number websites, practice documents and rubrics on this page to help students prepare for their test.

If you are eligible for testing accommodations, please see your case worker, ELD teacher or counselor to register for the Computer Proficiency Test with the necessary accommodations.

The Computer Proficiency Test is offered at least two times a school year and at least once each semester. The first opportunity to take the test will be in the FALL and the second time it will be offered in the SPRING.
Be sure to check with your school site master calendar for the exact testing dates each school year.

NOTE: Before students can use any school computer or access the Internet they must read and have their parent or guardian sign the OUHSD Student Technology Acceptable Use Policy. This Policy form is usually included in the packet your student received when enrolling for school. It must be returned to the school for school records.

Computer Proficiency Assessed Skills

The hands-on Computer Proficiency Test will assess the following skills in Basic Computer Skills, World Wide Web, Email, Windows, Word and Excel. Click each tab for a description of the skills assessed.

  • Distinguish between desktop and laptop computers.
  • Identify specific computer hardware: a system unit, monitor, printer, keyboard, mouse or touchpad, USB port
  • Turn computer and monitor on and off
  • Log on to computer
  • Demonstrate knowledge of function and placement of keys on keyboard: Enter, Shift, Control, Backspace, Delete, Arrow Keys, Tab, Caps Lock, Number Lock
  • Identify types of mice: mouse and touchpad
  • Identify mouse pointer shapes and match them to the correct context of use: typing arrow (text), arrow (basic clicking), hand pointer (clickable links)
  • Demonstrate appropriate use and ability to right-click and left-click
  • Double click and right click
  • Drag and drop
  • Use mouse to select check boxes, use drop-down menus and scroll
  • Adjust volume and mute audio
  • Plug in headphones correctly and use when appropriate
  • Identify icons on desktop (Internet Browser, Control Panel, Recycle Bin, Skype)
  • Demonstrate the ability to use the recycle bin correctly for trashing and retrieving items
  • Demonstrate understanding that it is possible to customize a computer for increased accessibility
  • Demonstrate understanding that mice can be customized for left-handed people and that the speed of clicking can also be customized
  • Demonstrate understanding that screen resolution can be changed
  • Demonstrate understanding that software programs are upgraded periodically and that different versions may be installed on different computers
  • Identify storage media: USB/Flash drives (external) and hard drive (external and internal)
  • Identify an Internet Service Provider and identify the main options for connecting to the internet: Dial-up, High Speed (cable or DSL), or wireless connection.
  • Identify commonly used browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari) and demonstrate knowledge of function.
  • Identify the address bar and enter a URL address.
  • Identify a website.
  • Identify a homepage.
  • Identify the following browser toolbar buttons and demonstrate the ability to use them: home, refresh, stop, back, forward
  • Use scroll bars to view different portions of webpages
  • Identify a hyperlink and demonstrate the ability to use a hyperlink to access other webpages.
  • Create a new tab, open a webpage in a tab, and move between tabs.
  • Enlarge the displayed text size
  • Fill out an online form.
  • Correctly enter CAPTCHA security codes.
  • Use zoom function to enlarge image (CTRL+ or CTRL-)
  • Identify search engines (Google, Yahoo!, Bing) and enter search terms into the search engine.
  • Identify pop-up windows and close them.
  • Identify pop-up windows have been blocked and enable individual pop-up windows as needed
  • Identify common domain types: com, org, gov, edu.
  • Demonstrate knowledge that there are ways to increase Internet safety for children.
  • Identify antivirus software providers and function of antivirus software (Norton, McAfee, AVG).
  • Avoid providing personal or financial information unless on a secured website (https://)
  • Identify the operating system used by a computer.
  • Shutdown, restart, and log off a computer.
  • Open, close and switch between windows
  • Minimize and maximize windows
  • Identify the toolbar and menus.
  • Identify the taskbar.
  • Start, and exit programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Demonstrate knowledge of Windows file organizational system and use it to locate files/documents (desktop, My Document, My Computer)

  • Identify basic office software programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint), demonstrate knowledge of their functions, and identify their corresponding file extensions.

  • Define and tell the difference between a URL and an email address (see World Wide Web)

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the difference between “Save” and “Save As” functions.
  • Use Save As to save to a particular folder or file location and name the document.
  • Use undo and redo arrows

  • Use spell check and grammar check
  • Format the size, color and type of font
  • Align text: left, center and right justify
  • Set single or double spacing
  • Use bullets and automatic numbering
  • Use print preview and print.
  • Set margins
  • Select portrait or landscape
  • Identify file extensions, corresponding document types and associated programs used to open them: pdf, xls, doc, docx, rtf, pub, ppt, pptx
  • Open a workbook.
  • Identify parts of  Excel Screen: ribbon, formula bar, active cell, name box, column letter, row number.
  • Identify sheet tabs, create a new tab, and rearrange tabs.
  • Name worksheets.
  • Locate a cell.
  • Create headings and freeze them.
  • Format cells: bold, underline, size, merge and center, wrap text, number (currency, time, percentages, etc.).
  • Adjust rows and columns.
  • Insert and delete rows and columns.
  • Enter data in a cell.
  • Select a range.
  • Sort data (least to greatest, alphabetically, etc.).
  • Use AutoSum (Sum, average, etc.).
  • Write a formula in the formula bar (-, +, *, /).
  • Use Auto Fill.
  • Copy and move cell entries.
